COLO-RECTAL
CHARITY DINNER
The Club turned out to
emphasis and continue their support for The Mid
Wales Colo-Rectal Cancer Fund at their inaugural
Annual Charity Dinner, held at the Ty Glyn Aeron
Hotel. We were given the task of organising and
running the Raffle, which proved to be very
successful on the night, raising a total of
£900.00. Thank you to everyone who donated
prizes. The night raised a total of £4,400.00.
The event was all the more successful due to the
organisational skills and hard work carried out
by Mark, Sue and Staff at Ty Glyn Aeron Hotel.

YOUTH SPEAKS COMPETITiON
Our first meeting of 2011,
at Ty Glyn, saw the Club host the initial local
round of the English Youth Speaks Competition.
There were junior and
senior teams representing Cardigan County
Secondary School and a senior team from Ysgol
Emlyn, from Newcastle Emlyn.
The idea of the
competition is that each team has three members
and puts forward a motion on a topic. One of the
team members is the proposer, another is the
opposer and the third member is the chair.
Adjudicators for the event
were Mrs Katie Jones, Ms Colleen Rafferty and Mr
Robert Fry.
The Cardigan Junior Team
presented their motion, 'This House believes
that Private Education is superior to that of
the State'. The team qualified for the next
round as no other entrant was in attendance.
Cardigan Seniors presented
their motion, 'This House believes that Britain
has gone soft'. Ysgol Emlyn's motion was, 'This
House believes that there is no such thing as an
individual'. Two very thought provoking and well
researched arguments were presented and,
following consideration by the adjudicators,
Ysgol Emlyn progressed to the next round.
Thank you to all the
teamsand the adjudicators who made it a very
worthwhile and enjoyable evening.

Our annual Aberaeron
street collection was again in aid of the Wales

couple of days but the local population showed
its support for the Air Ambulance with a total
of over £900.00 being collected. The streets
were a little quieter than usual but local
generosity shone through.

ABERAERON CHRISTMAS LIGHTS
The plan for the day was
to help set up tents and the site for the
evening events, along with the Rotary Coconut
Shy. However, this proved to be foiled by the
bad weather. As a result Cymdeithas Aberaeron
had a meeting and decided to move everything,
that could be, indoors at the Memorial Hall.
Members went along to offer any assistance that
they could..

DISTRICT CONFERENCE PLYMOUTH
Again Aberaeron Club won
the attendance shield as the members attended

Unfortunately this was the only trophy won as
our fancy dress was a little to subtle for the
judges.
During the conference
there were some very impressive presentations,
in particular Mary's Meals and the Rotary Doctor
Bank. These were considered to be two charities
worthy of our support.

VISIT TO NORWOOD GARDENS
The weather was not the
usual summer evening. It was windy with squally
heavy rain and the cold was soon felt. We were
given a guided tour which proved to be shorter
than usual as the ground and everyone present
got colder and wetter. Worth another visit in
the future so as to see things at their best.
The meal and refreshment at the Belle Vue pub

then always ahead and eventually ran out winners
63 pts to 48 pts.

ABERAERON CHRISTMAS LIGHTS SWITCH-ON
As we have come to expect
there was a good turnout of members.
The coconut shy was set up
and Ian Lampert manned the barbeque to roast the
chestnuts which, were provided free of charge.
People found them to be ideal to use to warm
their hands, as well as bringing back memories
from the past. It seems that nobody appears to
roast them now. A voluntary donations bucket
raised £15.00.
There were some hardy
souls around who braved the cold, wind and rain.
They had a go to win a coconut and quite a few
did. Must hope for at least dry weather next
time.

AUGUST 2009
ABERAERON CARNIVAL
This was to be a long day
with another visit to the square field, in Alban
Square. There were the initial tasks of
setting-up the coconut shy and erecting the
tent. There was a stiff breeze, at the time,
which was quite gusty, along with the promise of
rain. This required some extra ropes and straps
to keep everything in one place on the field.
Once we had all the tables
we needed we were able to display the tombola
prizes, jams, cakes, bric-a-brac, books, and
lollipops. We also had a Shelter Box and Aqua
Box on display so that visitors could see what
monies raised by Rotary were used towards. There
was quite a number of visitors interested in
these items, along with other aspects of
Rotary.
The day built up to when
the procession of floats entered the field. The
coconut shy was working flat out and, as a
result, ran out of coconuts an hour and a half
before the show finished. Also, the tombola sold
out and there was very little left of all the
other items.
The day turned out to be
warm, and on the whole sunny. This obviously
assisted in raising in excess of £600.00. All
other items remaining, books, videos and
bric-a-brac, were donated to local charity
shops.
Thank you to John, Elaine,
Ian, Ernie, Barbara, Bob, Donald, Roger,
Malcolm, Amy and David for their efforts on the
day and for all the preparation that had to be
done before hand.

MEMORIAL HALL, FELINFACH
A 'Colo-Rectal Day' was
organised by Cheryl Jones, which included craft
stalls and the draw for the charity raffle. The
function was due to be an outdoor event, in
Talsarn, but was moved indoors. This was due to
the inclement weather we had been experiencing,
along with the poor forecast.
The events was well
supported and members were utilised in taking
the money at the door, selling raffle tickets,
selling the pens (donated by Aberaeron Rotary
Club) and assisting in the sale of books.
The raffle was drawn at
the end of the event and, the money it raised,
was in excess of £900.00.
Thank you to John, Elaine,
Ian, Bob, Malcolm and Amy for their support.

The first round of this

but ably performed by Jeremy Jones,
the head chef from Ty Mawr Mansion Country
House.
The winner was Sian Downes and
the runner-up Carys Lewis.
Sian was awarded the
winner's shield and will be joining Jeremy in

JULY 2009 - ROTARY BOWLS COMPETITION
This years competition,
held at Llandrindod Wells Bowls Club, was
organised by Aberaeron Rotary Club following our
victory last year. David Bettles must be thanked
for his impeccable organisation for such a
smooth running and enjoyable event, with
assistance and support lent by Ernie Gunner -
President Elect. The organisation even went as
far as ensuring the morning rain and cool
weather was replaced with far more pleasant
conditions.
A very enjoyable luncheon,
hosted by Llandrindod Wells Rotary Club at the
Metropole Hotel, was attended by 68 Rotarians,
prior to the commencement of the competition.
There were 24 teams taking
part. Aberaeron were represented by the
defending champions David Bettles, Ernie Gunner
and Past President Ian Lampert. There was a late
appearance of an Aberaeron Rotary Club Second
Team, made up of our President John Bradshaw,
Treasurer Elaine Bradshaw and Malcolm Sumner.
Their late participation was required due to one
of the teams not turning up.
A further victory did not
prove possible this year. On the number of shots
won, over the five games, Aberaeron would have
won the competition but they lost one game 3
shots to 2. The second team did surprisingly
well, for being non-players, winning 2 games,
drawing 1 and losing 2.
The result of the
competition was:-
1st Machen;
2nd Britton Ferry; 3rd
Aberaeron
Following a welcome tea,

prizes were presented by the District Governor
